Gary's Story- A tribute to "Oh Cedar Tree"
Years ago Gary Hillaire, a Pacific Northwest Lummi Native American, went to
visit his grandfather, Joseph Hillaire. On approaching his bedside Gary heard
his grandfather chanting and pounding on his bed and as he drew near he
heard the words to Oh Cedar Tree. He told his grandson of the importance of
the cedar, that all parts of the tree were beautiful and had a useful purpose in
the lives of their people. He told his grandson to teach this song to all children
so they may know the value of the cedar tree.
Gary told us this story in the recording studio before he performed the song. We
thank him and his grandfather for this blessing. We are honored that Tickle
Tune may be a way to carry this message of the value and love for nature to
children.
